Collections of the Museum of Military History
The collections of the Museum of Military History contain more than 1.5 million objects, with a thematic focus on the historical development of the Austrian military from the late 16th century to the present day. The museum has four large collections: uniforms, equipment and insignia; weapons and technology; art (paintings, graphics and sculptures) and audiovisual media. Only a small part of the museum’s collections is currently on display in the permanent exhibitions and the various branches of the museum. The majority of the objects are stored in the depots of the museum and are only shown in temporary exhibitions or are on loan in external exhibitions. Since 1998, the museum objects have been electronically recorded and increasingly digitised. There is open access to part of this electronic inventory (“online catalogue”); around 85,000 objects are currently on display there.
Due to the technical revision of the website, it is currently not possible to view the online catalogue. For research enquiries, please contact contact@hgm.at and your enquiry will be forwarded to the relevant collection area. We are currently working on a new online tool for viewing the catalogue.
