Telecommunications Collection Vienna

Telecommunications Collection at the Starhemberg Barracks

History of military communications

Visitors are offered an impressive overview of the means of communication used by Austrian military throughout its history. The Telecommunications Collection houses a considerable amount of historical equipment (including radio transmitters and receivers, telegraph equipment and teleprinters, radio systems, etc.). Visitors can follow the development of military telecommunications from the 19th century through to the communication and encryption techniques of the Cold War (agent equipment) and modern military communication technology.

The equipment on display is largely functional and will be demonstrated.

The legendary Enigma machine

Historical encryption devices and cipher machines, such as the Enigma machine, are on display as special attractions. The Enigma machine is a rotor key machine that was used to encrypt the Wehrmacht's communications during the Second World War and before. Despite various improvements to the quality of encryption, the Allies committed substantial manpower and equipment to their decryption efforts and eventually succeeded in deciphering German radio messages.
